Check “Pause Media When Falling Asleep”
Apple provides this option on AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. When enabled, it can pause audio after your AirPods determine that you have fallen asleep. The setting applies to media playing from iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV.
Apple documents the supported models and setting in its official AirPods settings guide.
Why this can wake someone
The feature is designed to prevent a sleeping listener from missing an audiobook, podcast or other content. Continuous sleep audio serves a different purpose: the steady sound itself may be part of the preferred nighttime environment. A sudden change from sound to silence can be noticeable.
Turning the setting off does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. It simply removes one intentional AirPods pause mechanism.
Other AirPods controls that can pause media
Automatic Ear Detection
AirPods normally pause when one is removed and may stop when both are removed. An AirPod can remain in your ear but shift enough to affect detection. Apple lets you turn Automatic Ear Detection off in the same AirPods settings area.
Stem pressure
Pressing the stem pauses and resumes media on supported models. A hand, pillow or head movement could activate it, although the dedicated sleep-pause setting is the more direct explanation when playback stops after falling asleep.
Automatic switching
AirPods may move between Apple devices using the same Apple Account. If audio unexpectedly appears on another device, adjust Connect to This iPhone in the AirPods settings.
Battery and connection
Low battery, Bluetooth interruption or loss of internet access can also end the listening session. Check the YouTube player after waking: a visible pause usually suggests a control command, while buffering suggests a network problem.
Tap4Sleep versus AirPods playback
Tap4Sleep is a private organizer and launcher for personally selected YouTube sleep videos. After it opens your selection in YouTube, Tap4Sleep is no longer controlling playback. AirPods, YouTube and the iPhone decide whether the audio continues.
